Science Project on “Distance and Size”, Project Experiment Topics on Flight, Motion & Friction for Class 8, 9, 10 and 12 Students.

Distance and Size

Materials Required:

  1. A full moon evening
  2. Some coins
  3. A Street with telephone poles
  4. A measuring stick

With a diameter of 865,000 miles, it is very evident that the sun is very big. The moon on the other hand, with a diameter of only 2,160 miles is rather small. An eclipse is caused when the moon’s path, brings it between the sun and the earth. The sun is blocked by the moon and therefore, even in the day, it becomes dark for a few minutes. You will wonder, how can the moon, being so small, cover up the whole huge Sun? This happens as things closer to the viewer look larger than things which are farther away.

Try it with a small coin. Hold it at arm’s length against the moon and close one eye. As you try to see the moon, you will see that the small coin has actually blocked the whole moon.

You can also try the same experiment with a small measuring stick in a street with telephone poles. Hold the stick vertically at arm’s length and close one eye. Now move the stick between you and the telephone pole and try to spot the pole. You will see that the small stick has actually blotted away the whole large telephone pole.
