Bending the Light
Materials Required:
- A small steel ball bearing
- A strong magnet
- A flat table
Something that causes a change in something else is known as a Force. Gravity is a force which stops us from moving upwards. Larger objects have greater gravity and this is why the Sun’s gravity forces the planets to remain stuck to it. Similarly, the moon too exerts its gravitational pull on the Earth and this causes tides in the water bodies on Earth.
As a matter of fact, the sun’s gravity is so strong that it can also change the path of light. Many scientists claim to be able to see some stars, which are located just behind the edge of the sun. This happens because the Sun’s gravity actually bends the light emitted from these stars round its edge.
This phenomenon also happens with another force, called Magnetic Force. To prove the effect of gravity on light, you can use a magnet and a small steel ball bearing. First roll the ball along a table and make sure that it rolls straight along the table. Next, put a magnet on the table, placing it very close to the path where you rolled the ball. Now repeat the exercise and observe, if there is any deviation in the path of the ball, once it nears the magnet.
