Star Gazing

Materials Required:

  1. Moonless night
  2. Large Jars
  3. A large bag of beans
  4. Pencil and paper

Many centuries ago, before the invention of telescope, the naked eye was the only tool used to study night sky. How many stars can you see without the use of any equipment?

On a clear night, take some friends and go out under the sky. You can carry some blankets, big jars and beans. The outdoor area should be dark and without any artificial lightening. Wait for a few minutes to adjust your eyes to the dark. Lie down on the ground and look up at the stars.

Begin counting the stars slowly and make sure you don’t take your eyes away from them or you will loose the count. Drop a bean into the bowl for each star you have counted. When all the stars are counted, take the beans out and sum them.

Make a note of the number of stars, you and your friends have counted. Keep another star counting trip on a full moon. Compare how many stars you can count then.

Are the numbers of stars visible, affected by the bright lights in the neighbourhood? Do astronomers face problems with light pollution? Read a book on large telescopes and find out where they are on display in the city. You can visit a museum to find out more.

How long does the human eye take to adjust to light change. You can go into a bright house, after being in the dark for a while. Similarly, go out in the dark after staying in a well-lit room and calculate how long it is before you adapt to the change.
