Condensation and Water Vapour

Materials Required:

  1. One-litre plastic soda bottle
  2. Dinner plate
  3. Kitchen table
  4. Water
  5. Use of a freezer
  6. Pencil and paper

Did you ever find the ground wet early in the morning, even though it hadn’t rained? That water, all over the surface of the ground, is Dew.

Tiny droplets of water exist in the air but are too tiny to be seen. If the water in the air increases, we see it as fog. When the temperature of the air rises to a certain point, water needs to descend, as it can’t remain in the air. The temperature at which the water descends out of the air is called the Dew Point.

Is there water in the air of your room right now? Cold air can make the water vapor visible. Fill a plastic 1-litre soda bottle three-quarters full with water. Screw the cap on and place the bottle in the freezer. Wait until the water has turned to ice. Take the bottle out of the freezer and set it out on a dinner plate, on a kitchen counter or table. The ice in the bottle will cool the air that comes near it. As the air cools, the hidden moisture in the air will appear on the outside of the bottle. Is it white frost instead of water droplets? That happens if the bottle is very cold. The white frost is called Rime. It is something that appears on windowpanes during very cold nights.
