Heat from The Sun
Materials Required:
- Strings
- Two thermometers
- A long, pointed stick
- A body of water
- Pencil and paper
- An adult
The sun is the prime source of heat for our planet. Owing to the rotation of the earth, the sun sets in the evening and the surface begins to cool down by losing heat. This experiment is intended to find out what looses heat faster – the land or water bodies.
In the evening, at around 1700 hrs, locate a small pond or a lake, or even better, a swimming pool. Note that you should always have an adult with you, when you are near a water body. Now dig a small hole in the ground, of about 1 to 2 feet, next to the water body, with the help of the stick. Now tie the pieces of strings to the two thermometers. Place one of them in the hole that you have just dug on the ground and place the other one in the water. After some time has elapsed, take both the thermometers out from their sources and measure the temperatures they now record and compare them to the temperatures they had initially.
