Classifying Dead Insects
Materials Required:
- Dead insects
- A book on insects
- Pencil and paper
What kind of insects live in your neighbourhood? Collect insects from window sills around your home.
An undisturbed screened window in an attic, garage or shed, where insects are often trapped, may have a lot of dead insects lying there.
Remember spiders are arachnids, not insects. Insects have three pair of legs, but arachnids have eight legs.
Collect as many insects as you can find and identify. You may want to mount the insects on a display board and provide labels, giving their name and something about them. You could also identify, list and then release them back in your yard.
Quantify the number and types of insects you found. In other words, how many different kinds of dead insects did you find in the window sills?
Were one kind of insects found more in number as compared to others?
Are any of the insects trapped on the window sills still alive?
Are the living insects helpful or harmful?
