Solved Exercise for Precis writing “English as Medium of Instruction in the Public School” for Class 10, Class 12 and Graduation and other classes.

Some people attack the Public School in the name of social equality. They say that the Public School is a class institution seeking to perpetuate those characteristics which the ruling class considers essential for the continued maintenance of its authority over the other classes. 15 importance on horse-riding, sports, individual competition and rivalry and such other features, proceeds from the basic assumption that its products are to be trained for domination over other people.

I feel there is much truth in this criticism. The public School, I believe, must radically change if it has to play a decisive role in the shaping of the future of India. This change should consist in its coming ser to the life of the people of this country. This coming closer to the life of people of this country. This coming closer implies that the medium of instruction in Public School should be the language of the people of this land that is Hindi. It should not be taken to mean that English should be eliminated. I have absolutely no prejudice against English. I am in fact, convinced that in the modern world, knowledge of English is absolutely necessary and that our children should continue to learn it. I, however, do imply that the notion that English is the medium of attaining power and position should gradually disappear. It should be ceased to be treated as the sole badge of respectability and culture.

There has been, till recently, an unconscious assumption in the minds of those acquiring education through English that their main purpose in doing so was to acquire, as far as possible, the English way of life. This attitude cut them off from the Indian people. Their dress, speech, pattern of conduct, social values, tastes and hobbies, modes of recreation and enjoyment all become entirely different from those of the common people. They, in fact, became alien in the land of their birth. This was a disastrous development and it is now time that it is checked. My insistence on Hindi, therefore, flows from the conviction that for the building up of a democratic society and prosperous agriculture and industry in this country, it is absolutely essential that there should be no gulf of ideas and ideals between the intelligentsia and the masses.

Title:- English as Medium of Instruction in the Public School

The criticism against the employment of English as a medium of instruction in the Public School appears to be valid, since it creates in the minds of Indian youth a sense of superiority over common people, their main purpose being the adoption of English way of life. This attitude tends to make themselves alien in their own land. For the building of a democratic society and prosperous agriculture and industry we must see that there is no difference between the intelligentsia speaking English and the masses.
