The Doctor

A doctor is a person who is qualified to find out what is wrong with a sick person and what would cure him or her and it takes five to six years of study before a person is licensed to be a doctor. Different types of doctors are specialists in various parts of the body. Accordingly, it is necessary to choose the right type of doctor depending upon the ailment. To do so we first see a physician who is aware of various types of ailments and is able to cure them. Doctors check our heart beats with stethoscopes, our blood pressure with a sphygmomanometer, our temperature with a thermometer and our reflexes with a reflex hammer. If the patient is too sick the doctor might visit. the patient’s home and prescribe treatment after check-up in case he can’t then he would refer the patient to a specialist. Specialists include Paediatricians who treat children, Heart specialists who treat ailments of the heart, Orthopaedecians who treat fractures, E.N.T. specialists who treat the ear, nose or throat etc. Another type of doctor is a Surgeon, who perform operations on patient’s body. Most doctors are trained to clean and stitch a small cut or perform a minor surgery but for the bigger operations we have specialists like the Brain surgeon, Heart surgeon etc. In case surgery is required to remove an ailment, an appendix, for example, the patient is taken into the Operation theatre of a Hospital and here the surgery is carried out by a surgeon. To meet the medical and health requirements in remote villages or parts of a country, the government also has doctors who travel in these parts regularly to treat the patients. Such doctors usually have with them a full stock of medicines and necessary equipment to carry out tests if required: Some of these doctors even drive down in mobile dispensaries. Some countries have fully equipped aeroplane hospitals or train hospitals to meet the needs of people in the remote areas.
