How is a Television programme made?
The picture below shows a pop group making a television programme. As well as the performers a lot of other people with a lot of equipment are needed to produce a programme.
The three cameramen operate the TV cameras. Each can take a picture of the whole scene or a close-up, perhaps of just the singer’s face. Using a special lens the camera can even ‘zoom in’ from a distance without actually moving. Each camera takes a different picture of the group.
Stretching out over their heads is a micro-phone. The operator moves this around on the end of its movable pole, called a ‘boom’. It picks up the voices and music but is just out of the picture shown by the cameras.
These operators have scripts telling them what they are supposed to do. To make sure everyone works together there are controllers in a control booth, which is a room separated from the stage area by soundproof glass. The controllers have screens called ‘monitors’ showing the picture each camera is taking. They direct the camera and microphone operators through earphones, and choose which picture to broadcast.
