Revenge is a Wild Kind of Justice

Violence or cruelty has no place in civilized societies where the rule of law is honored. In these societies, the laws and the means of applying them are sufficiently versatile to ensure that justice is delivered equitably, in a humane way. In the past, revenge and retaliation might have been the means to seek justice against wrongdoing or to settle scores with enemies. But, if humanity, with its highly developed intelligence and capabilities, were to follow such crude practices, based on the law of the jungle, in modern times, it would before long, destroy itself. An act of revenge leaves behind a chain of bitter feelings in society which stays on long after the act has been carried out. Such acts will not lead to permanent solutions and, therefore, must be avoided at all costs. As Mahatma Gandhi said, “An eye for an eye will soon turn the whole world blind.”
