The Youth and Nation Building

The youth are filled with tremendous energy and towering ambitions and hence youth power is a recognized force in the world today. The youth can be utilized as a constructive or destructive force by any nation. The results delivered by our youths would be of gargantuan scale: their nature and severity must be imagined and planned in advance.

During the eighties the youth power made itself prominent in many socialist countries of Europe and in China. Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China, witnessed a powerful demonstration Thousands of Chinese youth’s sacrificed their lives to bring democracy in that autocratic State. Wherever there are riots in any country, political forces use the youth power to promote their interests. During the riots against Mandal Commission in India, thousands of college students agitated in the streets of various Indian cities.

With a population of over 100 crore India is a large country Students, employees, workers, farmers and persons from various professions—including the unemployed educate youths—are citizens who really matter in all walks of our national life. Unfortunately, a large number of these are without proper guidelines about their future. It is dangerous to allow them to remain idle as it would increase their frustration. This would result in chaos and even riots on a large scale. If these strong hands are not provided some suitable jobs, it would be a great national wastage of human resources. Thus they should be directed to engage in some constructive tasks.

This manpower can do wonders provided its potential is tapped for development projects of the nation. Indian youths have never lagged behind when called upon to meet any challenge. It is for the national leaders to decide about the activities of these young who are the reservoirs of strength. By carefully mobilizing their abilities and providing them with suitable opportunities, we can get Herculean tasks done by our talented youth.

Being Herculean, the task of nation-building can be divided into phases. Everyone can contribute towards the success of the same. According to their caliber, capabilities and capacities, all the young people may take part in this noble task.

Firstly, they should be made to understand a specific project and its importance to the society and also the parts that they could play in it for making it a success. Given a suitable direction, they are sure to work hard for its fulfillment. They would feel more than satisfied by the realization that they have been assigned a role in the task of nation building. This realization will encourage them to put their hearts for fulfilling the commitment.

Whatever is done by the government for nation building affects the whole society. The youth feel that they are being denied the right of participation in this task. It would be wise to associate them with all such programmes which are directly related to them. Such positive and result-oriented steps would satisfy their creativity. This would also give them a sense of belongingness and keep them involved in constructive jobs.

If one has the requisite honesty, intelligence and leadership, it is not very difficult to mobilize the youth for nation building tasks. Once they are genuinely involved, their interest in constructive tasks would be aroused. For the welfare of the country too, they would be prepared to work sincerely. Involvement of the youth would bring quicker and better results through a large number of schemes, projects and programmes. Energetic young boys and girls can play a pivotal role in the process of socio-economic reconstruction of the society.  Jawahar Rozgar Yojna and TRYSEM are the two vital schemes promoted by the government in this context. These schemes must be availed by the unemployed youth.

There are many evil practices prevalent in our society. If the youth are involved in a drive against these practices, the results are likely to be more favourable. They may be assigned the tasks of dissemination of scientific knowledge for better farming, new techniques of flood management and proper usage of fertilizers and pesticides.

During the campaigns against any socio-economic issue their energies could be used in moulding public opinion so that the remedial/elimination processes of such issues could be expedited. They may work successfully as strong arms of the administration in the implementation of government programmes. Another field in which their energies can be gainfully employed is the task of adult education and the universalisation of education. If given proper incentives, encouragement and support they can take over the responsibility of fulfilling the targets fixed by the government. Their services can be utilized to combat offences like smuggling, black marketing and hoarding.

They can also help the administration in creating public opinion against those who indulge in such unfair practices. Cooperatives may be encouraged through them for creating parallel marketing facilities to render the anti-social practices ineffective. There is a need to repose faith in those youths who, if properly directed, can change a gloomy desert into a blooming oasis.

The government will be successful in mobilising ideal manpower and would also save these young minds from becoming victims of anti-social elements by enlisting the cooperation and involvement of the youth force. By employing these persons in some socially useful tasks, the possibilities of occurrence of violence, unrest and turmoil could be minimized. It is therefore, in our national interests to lure these young men and women towards all types of developmental work. It may be suggested that they be trained in various vocational streams and should be allowed to develop scientific temper. Political activities in colleges and universities must be banned. Education should be made job-oriented. Pragmatic and based on the needs of students. Large amounts of funds are spent by our government on a number of organizations that are given charge of implementation of various development programmers. Involvement of the youth and their organizations would cost much less in terms of money. The young people may be inspired and encouraged to adopt villages or other suitable units of operation in which they can concentrate for their growth in professional terms.

The existing trend of the society has already wreaked havoc throughout the world. The behaviour of the youth has gone berserk due to invasions of satellite television, Internet and pub cultures. Drug mafias control lives of many of our talented youngsters. Indian youths are adept at copying anything coming from the West. If this dangerous trend is not checked, it is bound to spoil a sizable number of our youth. Addiction to cocaine popularly known as “the coke” and other drugs in the youth has crippled many talents in their buds.

Further neglect in this vital area would push our society in serious trouble. It is high time for our leaders to inject a fresh vigour in our youth, arouse their confidence and develop a sense of honour in them. They must also have appreciation for their cultural heritage and finally a patriotic fervour. Only then would we be able to construct a healthy and strong India.

All countries of the world shook] ensure that their youth power is properly utilized. The youth must not be led astray by politicians and criminals. Most university campuses are the hotbeds of political machinations. Elections to student leaderships are fought with a great vengeance. Student leaders hold enormous clout. They may be utilized by rival group of teachers to disturb the academic environment of institutions. An act should be passed by the Parliament to ban such elections and groups. Drug addiction gives them physical and mental debilities and makes them unfit for any useful job. If we do not control the growing tendency to use drugs in India, the youths are likely to fall into a dreadful trap of destruction and damage which would prove to be a complete disaster not only for .our young minds but also for society.

We shall lose a very potent force which can be used for the development during war/emergencies as well as for spreading literacy and education amongst the masses. The youth should be kept occupied in schools and colleges with facilities for sports and entertainment. NCC training must be made compulsory for them. The media are doing their best to inculcate the feelings of confidence and self-respect in the, youth. It is hoped that the Indian youth would start treading right path and overcome all hurdles in their way and would contribute to the nation building.
