The Pleasures of Reading

 

Man is regarded as a thinking animal. If our brain works much more than expected, than it requires some rest and recreation. Reading gives rest to the mind. However, it is possible only if reading is done for pleasure and not as a duty.

Reading may be very necessary fora school-going child, pastime for a retired person and a pleasure for many. The pleasures of reading are many and different. We can get these pleasures at any place and at any time. However, one should know how to read. Many people read books to get knowledge while others read books to pass their time, to get joy and fun.

People who have the ability of reading find pleasure in reading books, newspapers, magazines, novels, story books, etc. Small children find pleasure in reading fairy tales, jataka tales, panchtantra tales having moral stories, grandpa’s tales, etc. On the other hand, grown-up children find pleasure in reading novels and adventurous stories. They also like to read encyclopedias that give information about different areas of knowledge or about different. areas of one particular subject.

Books involving wit and humour entertain us. Such books make us lough as we read. Many sincere students also find joy and pleasure while reading the chapters and poems in their course books. Books help us to come across wide variety of explanations and images. Waves of joy rise within us as we turn the pages of a book. Sometimes joy in reading books come from the memory of what we have earlier read.

There are many pleasures that are outside the reach of people. However, the pleasure of reading is mostly within the reach as one can read anything at any time of the day. It is sad that poor and illiterate people are deprived of the pleasure of reading. Similarly, it is same with the blind and people having other visual problems.

While providing pleasure a book never makes difference between the rich and the poor. With same friendliness, all books give their readers happiness and knowledge. Among other pleasures like watching television, listening radio, eating favourite meals, etc. the pleasure of reading books are the courteous and the finest.

Books can give company to us when human beings cannot. We can happily spend our lonely hours in the company of characters created by the author. Any journey may be dull and boring if we do not have a book, magazine or a newspaper to read. One can also remember the past and create the future by reading. By reading books, we gain experience and sharpen our abilities of making decisions.
