City Life

Living in a city is a challenging or deal that reminds one of the age-old dictum, “God made the country and man made the town”. It demands enormous grit and perseverance. A city-dweller spends his life amidst mounting pressures in the cut-throat competition that is a hallmark of urban existence. This lead to loss of mental peace, marital discord and professional jealousies and misunderstanding with the result that many urbanizes follow the path of self-destruction. Challenges of urban life loom large in the shape of housing, food, education, health, living standards, jobs and commuting long distances everyday of the week. These are the inescapable realities of living in a big city.

The first problem faced by a new arrival in zany urban conglomerate is that of housing. Many middle-class families are crammed into box like rooms in chawls or slums in our cities. Many under-privileged persons become permanent pavement dwellers with no place to call their own just because they cannot afford a roof above their head. Yet there are many others who are not bothered about living or living standards. They turn major portions of cities into slums with attendant hazards like lack of sanitation, cleanliness as well as proliferation of crime, pollution and anti-social activities.

Life in a big city is busy. We do not have “the time to stand and stare”, as Walter de la Mare put it. There are no open spaces where one can go for a walk and breathe some fresh air. From dawn to dusk people are involved in the fret and fever of living. While people in the villages spend a healthy and tension-free life, people in big cities are always under severe mental strain. The home is a mere resting place for them. They leave early in the morning, travel long distances from and to their workplaces and return late. in the evening, tired and exhausted. This strain affects their health adversely.

There is no uniformity in city life. People lead their own lives according to the particular pattern they have set for themselves. There is no community life as one finds in the village. People meet and come together only for their selfish motives. There is lack of fellow-feeling and compassion because life in a big city has hardened people’s attitudes over a period of time. Fighting day-to-day problems on one’s own rather than find common ground with one’s colleagues and neighbours. The social life in a big city is artificial. People meet at weddings and funerals as a matter of mere formality, there being complete lack of sharing of joys and sorrows of their fellow human beings.

It is, indeed, a challenge to adjust to the fast-moving city life for any one. Big cities are often witness to act of vandalism, hooliganism and communal riots; rich people are often held to ransom for large sums of money for no fault of their own. It is virtually the law of the jungle prevailing in all urban conglomerates of the world. Whether it is New York or Mumbai or Tokyo, the pattern of life is almost similar in all big cities. Stabbings and murders for trivial reasons have become the order of the day. All ethical and moral standards have almost vanished from the scene. Love, affinity, fraternity, cooperation and sympathy, which are the hallmarks of rural life, are sadly missing in big cities today. Living in box like structures in multi-storied buildings, neighbours hardly know one another, leaving alone sharing their problems and travails.

The challenges of living in a big city-have physical as well as emotional. Toddlers are forced into over-crowded creches; they have to go to pre-primary schools because both the parents are working and have no time for their offspring. As a result, children go astray; they become tramps and drug addicts with no value system at all. Small children are packed as sardines in closed cycle rickshaws or rickety buses and left to fend for themselves over long distances. They are dogtired when they reach their schools and are not fit for anything else when they come back. They feel neglected and discarded. They grow up as complexed individuals.

Groan ups are also physically exhausted whether they have to work long hours at a desk job or in factories as manual labourers. They suffer from various physical ailments and emotional maladjustments during the course of their grueling work schedule. Asthma, bronchitis, backacke, phyringitis, tonsillitis and heart problems are some of the maladies that most city-dwellers suffer from today.

People move around like insects on roads and pavements during rush hours. Buses and local trains are packed to capacity. Some lives are lost everyday because of such overcrowding. Traffic jams delay those in vehicles so that they cannot possibly make for their next appointment in times. Bandhs, gheroas and strikes sponsored by various political and trade union outfits hamper smooth and efficient working in all big cities. When such protests and demonstrations take a violent turn, curfew is imposed. Life virtually comes to a standstill, resulting in loss of productivity.

The seemingly unlimited opportunities offered by big cities are dwarfed in comparison to the challenges posed to everyday life. Success comes to the selected and chosen few who make to the top rung of the ladder through hard work, grit, determination and luck. Those, who dream of getting rich overnight, land nowhere. Material pleasures are strewn all round us in big cities, but there is hardly any time to afford or savour them. This leads to frustration
