The Food Problem

Essay No. 01

Of all the problems confronting India at present the food problem is the most urgent and serious. Almost all Asian countries and particularly India suffer from food shortage. India does not produce as much food grains  as are needed  for her people. But the increase in the production of food grain recently has eased the problem a little. Still the government has to import food grains  from aboard. Unless this problem is solved, we shall never have peace. It is also a great obstacle in the way of our progress.

In the past, in India, there was no problem of Food grain. Our country was very prosperous in this matter. But during the Second World War this problem became very grave. The aim of Britishers  was not to feed Indians but to starve them. The result was that there occurred a severe famine in Bengal in which millions of our countrymen died of starvation. After Independence the Government of India tried to solve this problem and was successful to some extent. But the condition has not improved so much as it was expected.

There are many causes for the shortage of food grains  in our country. The Indian farmer is illiterate. He uses the old methods of agriculture. Land holdings are very small. The result is that the use of tractors and scientific methods, have become difficult. The same old ploughs and bullocks are in use in agriculture. Therefore the produce per acre in India is the lowest in the world.

Secondly, our agriculture is a gamble on rains. If there is a failure of rains all our crops dry up. If there is excessive rain the crops are damaged. Thus drought and flood play important part in India agriculture. The prosperity of agriculture depends upon the regular and normal rainfall. Thirdly , increase in population is the main cause of the food shortage in India. Food problem and population are inter- related. We produce more mouths to be fed than food to be given.

All the Five Year Plan shave taken measures to bring more land under cultivation. Adequate water supply is assured through tube- wells. The villages have mostly been electrified and training is being given to the cultivators to know how to increase food production.

Now the situation has changed considerably. India has supplied food grains  to Soviet Union and other countries last year. Almost all the food grains  imports have been stopped. It is due to the wise planning of the Government and the co-operation of the people. If the Distribution System is improved, the farmers would be assured of good price of their produce.

Multiple cropping and intensive cultivation programmes are in action. The methods of quick growing crops have been taken up. Though floods cause much havoc and every year the same story is repeated, yet India has been able to increase production of food grains with the help of new measures for cultivation. We hope in future India will be able to export food grains.
