Govind Ballabh Pant was born on 10 December 1887 at Almora in “Uttarakhand” (at that time Uttar Pradesh). He was born in a rich family. He was educated mostly at Allahabad. He passed his B .A. in 1907 and law in 1909. He then started practice and earned name, fame and money. He jumped into freedom struggle having been impressed and inspired by the ‘non-violent’ philosophy of Gokhale, Ranade, Dadabhai Naoroji and Madan Mohan Malviya. He worked mainly in Uttar Pradesh and came into contact with the Nehru family.

Allahabad was the centre of non-violent agitations. In those days burning of foreign clothes, staging sit-in strikes in front of liquor shops beat him with his baton, Pant threw himself on Jawahar and received all and taking out processions in the town were daily occurrences. In one of such procession the Nehru family was also present including Jawahar Lal and Vijaya Laxmi Pandit. Police used horses to trample the processionist and used sticks to beat them. The crowd dispersed. Many fell on the ground. Jawaharlal was also one of them. As a policeman was about to the blows. As a result of this he suffered from ailments for the rest of his life.

Pandit Pant is known as a able administrator. When the Congress formed governments in some states before independence, Pant’s abilities came to the forefront. After independence he was made Chief Minister of UP and later for many years was Union Home Minister. He had a command over governmental matters. He was a great patriot and was decorated with “Bharat Ratna” in 1957.
