Rafi Ahmed Kidwai

India : A Famous National Leader

Born : AD 1896           Died : AD 1954

Rafi Ahmed Kidwai was the Food and Agriculture Minister in the Nehru Ministry. During 1952, the prices of wheat suddenly shot up and the dealers started taking advantage of the situation but it was with Rafi Ahmed’s presence of mind and efficient handling of the situation that a major catastrophe in the wheat-market was averted. This step gained him great popularity. Even slum-dwellers knew him as a man who saved them their bread.

Rafi Ahmed Kidwai was born at Barabanki in Uttar Pradesh. After his graduation, he joined Gandhiji’ s Non-cooperation Movement in 1920 and was sent to jail. There, he got to know the Nehrus and acted as Pt. Motilal Nehru’s Private Secretary. In 1926, he fought elections as a member of the Swaraj Party, instituted by Motilal Nehru. In 1936, he was elected President of UP Congress. In 1942, he was again sent to jail for his active participation in Quit India Movement. Thus, his life was dedicated to the country.

It goes to the credit of Rail Ahmed Kidwai that he was a clean man in politics as well as in his personal dealings. He never took undue advantage of his friendship with the Nehru’s, nor did he amass wealth while being a minister. He was, instead, in debt amounting to several thousands at the time of his death. He was a symbol of Hindu-Muslim unity and bred no rancour for anybody though he had suffered a lot during Hindu-Muslim riots. He was above these narrow divisions that separate man from man.
