Cleopatra

Egypt : Beaux Yeux

Born : 69 B.C.     Died : 30 B.C.

‘Beaux Yeux’ in French means a pretty woman and Cleopatra has been for ages regarded as a goddess of beauty. Actually, ‘Cleopatra’ was a title with which queens and princesses were addressed in ancient Egypt. Amongst them the familiar woman exceedingly beautiful is Cleopatra VII. She was the eldest born of Ptolmey XI and as such was heir to his throne. Her brothers could not stomach the idea that a woman ruled them over. As such, they conspired to make her flee from Egypt. It may be mentioned that apart from being a famed beauty, Cleopatra had a strong personality besides being very clever.

At the time of her exile, Egypt was under Roman rule. Most of the wheat required by the Romans came from Egypt. The Roman ruler Caesar came to Egypt, when it was passing through a civil war. Cleopatra was trying to regain her throne. She thought of taking Caesar’s help and adopted a novel trick to reach Caesar. She hid in a priceless Egyptian carpet and when it was unrolled before Caesar, out came Cleopatra, a woman of dazzling beauty. Caesar was immediately enamoured of her. She fell in love with Antony, a friend of Caesar, later. Cleopatra’s fate was again in doldrums following Caesar’s demise. The Roman Empire was divided. Finally, Antony was defeated, and out of shame, committed suicide. When Cleopatra heard of this catastrophe, she also embraced death by taking poison.
