The Gardening

How often have you admired beautifully kept gardens in and around your locality? It is needless to say a beautiful garden is a pleasure to the sore eyes. However, it is also a sad truth that in this day and age of high-rise buildings and shrinking greenery, gardens and lawns are becoming difficult to come by. Still, there are some patches of earth that are lovingly maintained by the sheer hard work of the owners.

Behind a well-maintained garden lie the love, care, and sweat of the gardener. Gardening is on the whole a dirty work. One has to dig up the hard earth and make it soft. Flower beds are to be planned with great care. The garden has to be watered and manured at the proper time. Subsequently, it has to be kept free from pests, diseases, and accumulated litter. One has to keep oneself dirty all the time if one wishes to give life and beauty to the garden.

Gardening can be compared to mothering. Just like a mother, a gardener has to keep a round-the-clock vigil on the plants. He has to take care of every need of the plants under his care. Plants are like infants, who have been born out of mother earth. They have come onto their own because you as a gardener have desired them to be born. You have sown seeds and seedlings in the barren earth. Therefore it becomes your duty to make sure that they survive the harsh world outside.

Developing a garden is like creating a new world. A plant is a living breathing thing. It feels just the same way as animals and humans feel. Your garden therefore cannot be wished away to servants and strangers. It needs your personal attention. It requires a proper diet and above all, it requires your love and affection

In return smiling flowers in your garden make you feel fresh. They make you feel young. They give new life to your body and mind. Working amidst growing plants and blooming flowers is the best medicine for a tired mind and body. The beauty and fragrance of the flowers are the best tonics in the world. It is very refreshing to sit in a cool garden. The calmness of the garden has been instrumental in many great discoveries and artistic creations. At this point one can make an observation-had there been no garden, no apple tree, and no falling apple, would Newton have discovered the ‘Law of Gravity.
