Safe Motherhood Day – 11th April
Safe Motherhood Day is celebrated on the 11th of April as an awareness campaign about pregnancy and childbirth-related complications. The Government had declared April 11th, the birth anniversary of Kasturba Gandhi, as National Safe Motherhood Day. A rally was organised highlighting the importance of providing necessary medical and healthcare facilities to expecting mothers. The motto of the rally was “Save our mothers.”
The Day 11th April is a commitment towards reducing maternal mortality. After 50 years of Independence, women are still dying during pregnancy, delivery, and after delivery. This is a very sad situation and unacceptable. There is a need to have better health policies for women. Emphasis should be given that women need prenatal care, a doctor or nurse to attend to their deliveries and post-partum care as sixty percent of maternal deaths happen after delivery. Most of these deaths are preventable if timely health care is availed. Hence pregnant women are advised to :
- At least three antenatal checkups at a health centre.
- Adequate nutrition means 1 extra meal a day and also take iron and folic acid tablets for 100 days.
- To have delivery in a hospital, as it is always safe for both mother and child.
- Three checkups after delivery.
“Safe Motherhood, To save society.”
