World Haemophilia Day – 17th April
Haemophilia Day is celebrated all over the world by Haemophilia organizations. In India, Haemophilia Day is observed by the Haemophilia Federation of India. Haemophilia is an inherited, lifelong disorder that mainly affects men. In this disease, lack of certain proteins prevents blood clotting and the patient may bleed to death if medical help is not given. There is one necessary substance for blood clotting, called ‘anti haemophilic factor’. It is generally missing from people who have inherited the disease. These unfortunate people may die of haemorrhage from quite small cuts or minor surgical procedures like tooth extraction. It was on the 17th of April in 1926 that Frank Schnabel was born with haemophilia disease in the state of Washington. In 1953, under his leadership, a Haemophilia society was created as an awareness programme to highlight the problems and remedies of Haemophilia. In Haemophilia, clotting is delayed when one of the clotting factors is absent or deficient. According to Dr Mythily, “Haemophilia, though an inherited and lifelong affliction, can be tackled with lifestyle changes and help from the world of medicine. The maintenance of healthy joints and muscles by regular physiotherapy improves the quality of life. Public awareness and understanding will go a long way in making the life of such persons more meaningful and relaxed.
“Haemophilia is not a disease, Just a bleeding disorder at ease.”
