Celebration of International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction reaffirms its commitment towards effective and efficient disaster management throughout the world. The people suffer terribly under natural disasters such as drought and flooding. Hence urgent steps must be taken to avoid further hardship and loss of life. Emergency assistance should be provided in ways that will support recovery and long-term development. Rapid strides in industrialisation and technological development during the twentieth century coupled with mankind’s, exploitation of the environment has changed the working of natural biosphere. The gradual changes in world climate is manifesting themselves in extreme weather events, more droughts, more floods. The way we are changing the natural environment renders these hazards more destructively.

The United Nations call to observe the second Wednesday of every October as the international Day for Natural Disaster Reduction in order to focus on international initiatives for minimizing the adverse impact of natural calamities particularly in the developing countries. To maintain the tempo of these disaster reduction activities, public awareness, disaster management training and community participation is the need the hour. Above all, it is an occasion to frame and train policy that will provide humanitarian assistance to victims of disasters in accordance with the principles of humanity, neutrality and impartiality. It is the prime responsibility of Government as well as Non-Government organisations to advocate needs, facilitating the supply of food, water, medicine, shelter and health care at the time of need. Organisation such as the South Africa Disaster Relief Agency, Operation Hunger, and Red Cross are at the forefront ensuring that the much-needed assistance reaches those people who require it most. Celebration of the Day with initiative highlighting the way ahead on how to reduce risk, man and material management during the disaster. Avalanches can wipe out many villages, heavy rains can wash away fields, and long drought can spell starvation. Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions can make thousands homeless. Hence several initiatives highlight the way ahead to show how to live with the risk and benefiting from risk mapping education and mountain development.
