Postal Day – 9th October

World Postal Day is celebrated every year to assess and achieve new targets in the field of postal services. The postal service serves as one of the important ways of communication for the general masses throughout the world. Postal service helps us to deliver necessary informative and emotional exchange of news and views and thus is a part and parcel of our life.

Universal Postal Union (UPU) was established on 9th October 1874. It became a specialised agency of the United Nations in 1947 due to its importance in communications. Universal postal service aims to perfect various postal services. Many countries became their members. The member countries are united in a single postal territory for the exchange of mail. In India also National Postal Day is commemorated on the 10th of October, throughout the country. In 1727, the East India Company established itself in the area of Kolkata. The Postal Act was passed in 1837 by the Governer General in India. Thereafter the greatest reform was the introduction of letterboxes sited away from the post office. We can send and get money orders, deposit money like we do in a bank. To commemorate special days, persons or events, postage stamps are released by the Communications and Information Ministry. Hence the celebration of Postal Day is a salute to the persons engaged in postal services.
