Abolition of Slavery Day – 2nd December

Abolition of Slavery Day, observed on the 2nd of December each year, is a worldwide awareness campaign against slavery in any form. Celebration of Abolition of Slavery Day on 2nd December is a reaffirmation of the inherent dignity of all men, women and children. Bonded labour, forced labour involving children, women and migrants are different forms of slavery. The Abolition of Slavery Day also points out finger on sexual exploitation, domestic servitude and so on.

This inhuman practice of slavery in America was abolished by Abraham Lincoln, the President of America. Since then, Acts and Laws have been framed to abolish slavery, but still, it continues in some form or the other. The abolition of slavery in all its forms is one of the aims of the United Nations.

Action to combat slavery should not be limited to judicial and law enforcement measures. Every individual can also contribute to the eradication of slavery by tackling the social conditions such as poverty. Poverty is such a condition of human’s life which make people vulnerable to exploitation. Grants should be given to Nongovernmental Organizations (NGOs) by the Government to provide humanitarian, legal and financial assistance to the victims. Slavery in any form should be routed out from the grassroots level. But in this effort, the exploited would also have to raise fingers against the exploitation.

“Slavery is abuse to humanity, Abolish it for life’s dignity.”
