World AIDS Day – 1st December

This day is celebrated on the 1st of December as a national awareness programme. AIDS, in fact, Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, is not a disease, but a condition of one’s body caused by the Virus. When one gets infected with this virus, the body’s immune system starts failing. When HIV enters an adult human being, it takes 7-10 years time to destroy the whole immune system.

Symptoms of AIDS are:

  1. Frequent or persistent fever.
  2. Significant weight loss.
  3. Continuing diarrhoea for more than one month.
  4. Fatigue without reason.

There are 4 main routes through which HIV spreads:

  1. Unprotected sexual intercourse with an infected partner.
  2. Use of unsterilised syringes and needles.”
  3. Untested blood or blood products.
  4. Infected mother to her newborn child.

AIDS is a grave challenge for India and the world. Already millions of our countrymen are carrying the HIV virus, which ultimately causes AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). Efforts are being made worldwide to find a cure for this dreaded disease. But today the only weapon that we have is prevention. The National AIDS Control Programme is being implemented by the Government for the prevention and control of HIV/AIDS. A comprehensive range of activities has been taken up to create awareness, treatment facilities and ensure blood safety.
