Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the theatre performance of the famous play ‘The Merchant of Venice’ to mark 400 years since the death of Shakespeare. There will be four acts, with a 20-minute break. During the show, we ask you to remain seated on the chairs, and please keep children behind the VIP row in the front of the stage. The Cafeteria is on the top floor and the restrooms are located in the fenced area to the right of the stage. The parking gate will be opened from the east side after the show is over. When the play begins, please turn off your cell phones. Thank you for coming, and we hope you enjoy it!
Task 2
You will hear two friends Shubh and Roma talking to each other about English Speaking classes. Read the statements below, then listen to the conversation and choose five of the options A-H which are correct. You will hear the recording twice.
Roma: Hi Shubh! How are your English Speaking classes going on?
Shubh: My classes are going very well Roma! I am finding them very helpful in my day to day life. Now, I don’t hesitate speaking in English and can speak with less mistakes than before.
Roma: Yes, I also noticed that now you answer more in class and speak clearly.
Shubh: Yes, till now, I used to be so afraid that I’ll commit a mistake and everyone will laugh at me. But with regular practise in my English Speaking class, I have gained lots of confidence. We also watch English Movies and read out loud from books to each other in class.
Roma: Seeing your progress, I and my mother were discussing that I should also join the English classes because nowadays English is a must and I’m still afraid of speaking in English with strangers.
Shubh: Well then Roma, you should join English classes. In addition to improving speaking, these classes have helped me in improving my writing skills and English grades as well. I am hopeful that they will help me in my preparation for higher studies abroad and a bright future ahead.
Roma: Thank you Shubh! Do you have some tips for me, so that I can speed up my progress?
Shubh: Yes, I do! You should first recognise your weak and strong points in English- and then work on them. You should also set a rule that you and your friends will converse in English. This increases fluency and we can correct each other’s mistakes too.
Roma: What should I do to improve my writing skills?
Shubh: My teacher advised me to keep a diary to record the day’s events. This helped me a lot. You can try doing that.
Roma: Thanks again Shubh. I look forward to joining the class.
Shubh: You are welcome, Roma!
Task 3
You will hear five different people talking about social networking. Read the statements given in the worksheet, then listen to the extracts and match each statement A-G to each speaker 1-5. There are two statements you do not need. You will hear the recordings twice.
Speaker 1
The Internet has revolutionized the life of a man from merely being a normal working person to a social person in a virtual world. Internet has changed many aspects of our lives. But a special innovation which it brought about was the social networking. While growth and speed of progress have increased due to this, a special bonding is happening between human beings.
Speaker 2
It has definitely been a boon to society. Over twenty years ago the only way we had to keep in touch with others was by letters, telegrams or phone calls. But today we have media like SMSs, emails, WhatsApp and what not, there are so many terms. Social networking has allowed people to stay in touch with family and old friends.
Speaker 3
Yes, we get an extraordinary platform to express our feelings, thoughts and messages through social networking. These sites also bring us a lot of information which we had missed or not noticed. The experts suggest that using social networking is not wrong but the way it is used is important. Youngsters must be guided about its rights and wrongs.
Speaker 4
Though it is providing us with a great platform, it is also creating a dumber generation which lacks the real life essence. People have started living in a virtual world glued to their small screen fantasizing about life forgetting the real world outside. Gone are the days, when evenings were time to play, meet friends and socialize.
Speaker 5
Social networking actually blends people to do that is opposite to what society wants in real. It hampers the ability of an individual to deal with people off screen and makes it difficult for people to live and interact in a non-virtual society. It makes an individual its slave. And individuals are reduced to the level of so called “masters” of social network.
Task 4
You will hear a speech about personality development by Dr. Neeru Pandit. Read the questions below, then listen to the extracts and choose A or B or C for each question. You will hear the recordings twice.
Hello and good morning! So who wants to develop a good personality? Of course, everyone! So today I am going to share with you some tips to develop your personality. First, get to know yourself. Obviously before you get on developing something you need to know all about it. The same goes with your personality. One needs to start with taking a good look at themselves, analyzing their traits, the strengths and weaknesses and everything that needs to be worked upon. Don’t shy away from accepting your flaws and learn about yourself as much as you can.
Secondly, your thoughts and your actions both need to be positive if you want to have an attractive personality. The way we think has a lot of effect on how we act. And if one prospers positive thoughts inside his mind then that also gives him a confidence boost and enhances their personality. Situations and circumstances in life can always be full highs and lows. But in order to adopt a positive outlook towards life, you need to find the brighter side of the things and focus on the good parts.
Thirdly, meeting new and different kinds of people is a healthy step towards expanding your horizons and exposing yourself to a large number of things. You get an opportunity to know more about other cultures and lifestyles and it significantly has a positive effect on your own personality.
Fourthly, it’s important to have an opinion. Having an opinion and being able to confidently put it forward doesn’t just help making your conversations interesting but it also makes you look more influential and well informed around other people. Never shy away from projecting your opinions even if they happen to conflict with those of other people. Be well informed about all the relevant stuff in your surrounding and feel free to have opinions.
Fifth, be a good listener. Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply. Being a good listener may not seem like but it is an important step towards achieving a more likable personality. When somebody talks to you, listen with interest and give them all the attention and importance. Maintain a direct eye contact and do not get distracted by the surroundings. It will help you in knowing a better deal about people and attending them in a better way.
Last but not the least; check your attire. I am not emphasizing about your exterior self instead of your skills and abilities but one’s attire has an important role to play while making a desirable impression. And not just that, but it also gives yourself a confidence boost knowing that you look good and are dressed appropriately. Dress up in a decent manner and keep your surroundings in mind. While flashy colors and too much body tattoos or piercings convey an unprofessional attitude, neatly ironed clothes make you look presentable.
