A Memorable Day in My Life-English Essay, Paragraph, Speech for Class 9, 10, 11 and 12 Students.

A Memorable Day in My Life

I did not wake up and find myself famous on the morning of the 4th of April, 1999. No one wished me even when I left my bed. In that Boarding House, which accommodated two hundred students of the Government College, not one thought much of me as I passed the corridor. Yet it was going to be the memorable day of my life.

It all came in this way. I was at that time an indifferent cricketer, not the well-known spin-bowler, nor the talented batsmen which I am thought to be now. Yet as I was passing along the corridor in front of Hari Ram’s room-Hari Ram was the college skipper-I was curtly informed that I was to be the eleventh man in the college team that day. My heart simply leapt. For I was ambitious and of late was showing better form than I had ever done.

We were playing that day against the strongest cricket team in the town, Minerva Club. There was not the ghost of a chance of our putting up a good show. They batted first and picked up 250 before lunch for 6 wickets (declared). It was a hurricane batting from beginning to end and fours and sixes came in any number. Then we began our innings. And our stalwarts went down in a short time before the steady bowling of Mohan and Ram, and de- feat was only a matter of time.

When we were nine wickets down, we had made only 63 runs. Then I went into batting amid the jeers and cheers of many of my college teachers. Ordinarily, I would have been very nervous. But so many strange things had happened that day that I was feeling quite confident. Anything might happen. And something did happen.

Ghosh, who was the tenth man, was a steady bat and a sound one too. He soon realised that he was set for a big score and helped me a lot by enabling me to face the ball frequently. In the first over I made 13 runs; rather an unexpected thing. Then I simply went in for it. Would you believe me, I hit 10 sixes and 23 fours! Runs were mounting up at an extraordinary rate. At tea time, I had piled 145 runs. Shortly before five we reached the total of 251 and the match were over!

I was simply delirious. I had turned certain defeat into victory. I was loudly cheered, garlanded and taken to the Boarding House in a procession. I was proud and a little giddy. Perhaps I even attempted to make a speech. But at this distance of time, I do not exactly remember if I threw an ink-pot at the superintendent or not. He told the principal a few things amounting to some such charge but the Principal, I remember, advised mutual tolerance and a noble spirit of forgetfulness. Anyway, the incidence was forgotten or remembered only in the circle of many intimate friends and companions.

But the crowning glory of the day was the wire which reached me at 8 p.m. I had won a lottery. One lakh rupee! I did not swoon, nor did I babble. The fact is my friend, Shyam Sunder, was too quick for me. He poured a whole bucket full of water on my head and the sobering influence of such a lot of water does not disappear quickly.

Oh! I was happy. I have never been so happy as on that day. Now the shadows of the prison house, in the words of Wordsworth, were fast falling upon me. The memories of the past are now becoming hazy. But I can always look back upon that day of my life and console myself. I, too, have had my hour.
