The Dog and The Ass

A washerman kept a dog and an ass. Both of them helped him to carry on his work. The dog guarded his house at night, whereas the ass carried heavy bundles of dirty clothes to the river.

Once at midnight the washerman and his wife were fast asleep, a thief entered the courtyard where the ass and the dog lay awake. Both of them saw the thief.

The dog used to guard the house, but that night he did not bark to warn his master. At this indifference, the ass said, “Bark loudly, my friend, and awake the master up.” But the dog kept quiet since he had been thrashed by the washerman that day.

The ass got angry and tried to do the dog’s duty. He began to bray very loudly. The thief ran away and the washerman woke up. He picked up a stick and rushed out into the courtyard. As no one was there in the courtyard, he gave the ass a good beating for disturbing his sleep for nothing.

Moral: Mind your own business.
