If one were to refer to Kathak Dance, the name to be conjured with will be Ilirju Maharaj. It is he who has established Kathak as a classical dance-form. He is a great guru who has produced renowned artists, evolved different styles and new traditions. Kathak dance form flowered due to his efforts. If it is popular and respected today, the credit goes to Birju Maharaj.

His efficiency and ability gained for Birju Maharaj great respect. At 22, he received the prestigious national award of the Central Sangeet Natak Academy. He was given “Padma Bhushan”. Madhya Pradesh government awarded him the “Kalidas Samman”, the highest in the field of fine-arts. He is a combination of an efficient dancer, a singer and a player of instruments. He has been abroad and has been hailed as a dancer with extraordinary abilities.

Born on 4 February 1938, Birju Maharaj belongs to a family with a sound background in dancing. His father Acchhan Maharaj was also a dancer. He spent his childhood in Rampur, Patiala and Raigarh and was fortunate in being in an atmosphere conducive to his talent. His stage performances earned him name and appreciation when he was young which served as an inspiration to him. Behind his success, however, there is unflinching perseverance, hard work and talent.

Birju Maharaj has dedicated his life to his art. He is the guiding light to new-corners in the field. He is an able choreographer. Kathak Dance form will always display his influence. Presently, he is the Director and Guru at Centre for the Kathak in New Delhi.
