Respected Father,

Thanks for your letter that reached me today morning. It is good to know that everyone at home is doing well.

However, one news item in your letter has given me quite a shock. I can’t believe that you intend to marry Rashmi this summer. Though it is not for me to interfere with elders in family matters, yet I can’t help expressing my resentment in regard to this decision.

Isn’t it too early to think about her marriage, when she should be pursuing her higher studies like other girls of forward -looking families ? She has just stepped into her sixteenth year and has not even passed the High School Examination. I firmly believe that she should be left to herself for a few more years, until she completes her university education. In the world of today, higher education is as much necessary for girls as for boys. Moreover, Rashmi has been a highly promising and bright student. She has been regularly topping her class in each and every examination and all her teachers speak very high of her. Given proper facilities, she is sure to develop herself into a scholar. If on the other hand, she is married now, the bud would fade away, before it blossoms into a flower. As far as I can understand, girls should not get married these days, before they are twenty.

I suggest that you should know Rashmi’s views as well in the matter. I am sure she will not like to be married now. May I expect that you will value her opinion and not be guided solely by social customs or family traditions ?

Hope you would be kind enough not to treat my suggestion as an act of defiance, or impudence. With profound respects,

Yours lovingly,

Om Mehta
