Under The Rocks
Materials Required:
- An adult
- Several large rocks in your neighbourhood
- A strong stick
- Pencil and paper
Which of the living creatures make their homes under rocks? Find it out by turning over rocks in and around your neighbourhood.
You may find ants, larvae, worms, millipedes (many legs), centipedes (a hundred legs), spiders, crickets or beetles but watch out for creatures that bite or sting.
Draw pictures of the animals you find living under the rocks. Describe their body parts, the number of legs they have, their colour and other things about them. Get a book on insects from the library and try to look out in it for the animals you saw.
Did you find any difference in the kind of animals under the rocks in a wet place, such as near a lake and the ones found in dry places or were they similar?
Are the animals found under the rock, similar to those, you may find under an old board or log?
