Insulation with Soil
Materials Required:
- Two small soup cans
- Two large cans about 5 inches (13 cm) in diameter
- Two thermometers
- Soil from your yard
- Warm water
- A watch or a clock
Many living things find shelter in the ground from varying temperatures, hot and cold. Some animals sleep on the ground during cold winter months. The ground protects plant bulbs and root systems from cold temperatures.
Fill two small soup cans with warm water from the sink. Put a thermometer in each of the cans. Place one of the small cans, in the middle of a bigger can. Fill the space in between the two cans, for insulation.
Write down the temperature showing on the thermometers. Every five minutes, look at the thermometers and write down the temperatures. Do this for half an hour.
Make a graph showing the rate of temperature change. Did the can of water surrounded by soil keep its heat longer than the one surrounded by air? Is soil a better insulator than air?
Find out if the best heat insulator also the best cooling one? While you are at it, try other kinds of insulation, such as water or leaves.
