Living Underground
Materials Required:
- Five anthills
- Paper and pencil
We can tell the presence of an anthill, if we see a mass of soil near a small hole. In nature, an animal might walk over the hole and block it. A twig may fall of from the tree and clog its entrance. In such an event, do you think the ants will dig the same hole out again or make a different one?
Look for five anthills in the garden and cover their openings with soil. Make a note of what the ants do next, but be sure not to harm them. Will the ants try removing a twig, if it fell from a tree? What does this tell you about the ants?
Build an ant farm in the garden and observe the small insects for a few days.
