Ground Temperatures
Materials Required:
- Oak tree
- Pine tree
- Two thermometers
- A cold winter day
- Pencil and paper
Deciduous trees are those which lose all their leaves in the fall. Oak tree is a kind of deciduous tree. Conifers are trees that stay green all year. Pine tree is one such example. During winters, is the ground underneath a pine tree warmer than the ground under an oak tree?
Find a pine tree and an oak tree in your yard or at your school or in the neighbourhood. Underneath each tree, about two feet (60 cm) from the trunk, push a pencil or a narrow stick into the ground, to make a hole several inches deep. Put a thermometer into each hole.
Wait for a few minutes before reading the temperatures. What is the temperature under the pine tree? What is the temperature of the ground underneath the oak tree? What is the air temperature? Does it make a difference, if the day is sunny or cloudy? What does the ground look like around each tree? Are there leaves piled around the oak tree?
Do the needles of a pine tree make a better blanket against clothes in winter? How would you go about setting up a project to testify this guess or hypothesis? Are fruit trees any different?
