Paragraph on “X-Rays” complete paragraph for Class 9, Class 10, Class 11 and Class 12

X-Rays

In 1895 a scientist called Wilhelm Roentgen was experimenting with cathode rays, electricity discharged under high voltage through a series of tubes, in partial vacuum. He noticed that some crystals lying nearby were glowing. Wilhelm knew that cathode rays could not penetrate glass, thus it was quite possible that some other type of rays also existed. Since these rays were invisible and unknown, he decided to call them `X-Rays’. These rays were later also called ‘Roentgen rays’. X-rays are produced in a X-ray tube from which most of the air is pumped out. In this tube are located an Anode and a Cathode, the electrons travel from the Cathode to the anode, to a target made of Tungsten where these electrons are stopped and converted to heat. Some of the heat becomes radiation and X-rays are formed. It is easy for X-rays to penetrate objects because they have a very short wavelength and if their wavelength is increased, they tend to become weak.
