What do we know about Celtic society and culture?
The Celts were a high-spirited people, proud of their fighting qualities, and fond of feasting and drinking. Each tribe was ruled by a king supported by a warrior aristocracy and they would have made far more formidable foes if they had not quarrelled among themselves so much. Their priests, known as Druids, had great influence and practised human sacrifice. The Celts lived in small communities raising livestock and growing cereals. They wore simple clothes made of wool or linen and were fond of bright colours.
Celtic art had a distinctive style of its own. Pottery was beautifully decorated with intricate, abstract designs and the Celts showed great skill in adorning bronze objects, such as drinking vessels, shields or brooches, with coloured enamel and coral. In later times a more richly decorative art flourished in Ireland.
