Paragraph on “What became of the Celts?” complete paragraph for Class 9, Class 10, Class 11 and Class 12

What became of the Celts?

The Celts in Gaul settled down happily under Roman rule and in Britain, after some resistance, the native Celtic inhabitants were ready to accept the benefits of Roman civilisation. After nearly 400 years of peace, the Romans withdrew from Britain in the early part of the fifth century. Very soon, in the face of invasions by Angles, Saxons and Jutes, from Germany and Denmark, the Celtic population retreated into Wales, Scotland and Cornwall.

In Scotland the Gaelic Celts, who had never been conquered by the Romans, eventually became united in one kingdom in the ninth century. In Wales, the Celtic tribes divided their country into a series of small states, which were eventually absorbed into Norman England by King Edward I.

Ireland had been populated by Celtic tribes in the fourth and third centuries BC. It was never under Roman rule and remained un-disturbed by the Anglo-Saxon invasion of Britain, although the various kingdoms into which the country was divided, were frequently at war with one another. Despite continual strife Irish culture, under the inspiration of Christianity, flourished when European civilisation elsewhere was in danger of being overwhelmed by barbarism. The Irish produced beautiful illuminated manuscripts, exquisite gold and silverware and splendid stone crosses.
