The Neanderthal Man

Excavations have revealed remains of the Neanderthal man in Middle East and Africa. Around 70,000 years ago during the Ice age Europe was inhabited by the Neanderthal man. This is evidenced by the fact that the first remains of the Neanderthal man were found in the Neander valley in Germany in the year 1856. Subsequent to this remains were also found in various parts of Italy, Britain and France. The Neanderthal people were about 4.5 feet tall and had muscular bodies. Their skulls were low and long but, compared to the apes, they had large brains. These people knew how to make tools like axes, stone scrapers, spears etc. They hunted large animals like the Woolly Mammoth in groups. They lived in caves and knew how to make fires and keep themselves warm. The Neanderthal man lasted for about 35,000 years and then became extinct. The Neanderthal man was the predecessor of the Cro-magnon man.
