Paragraph on “The Crusades” complete paragraph for Class 9, Class 10, Class 11 and Class 12

The Crusades

For a long time the city of Jerusalem was under the control of the Turkish Muslims. Close to the end of the 11th century A.D. the Pope asked the Christians to recapture the holy city from the Turkish Muslims. This was the beginning of the holy wars called the Crusades. In 1096 a large number of European people, including Kings, Princes, Knights, Peasants and Pilgrims left Europe towards the Holy city in the first Crusade. Most of the crusaders died enroute because of exhaustion and starvation in the long and dangerous journey. By the year 1099 the city of Jerusalem and Constantinople was captured from the Muslim Turks. A second crusade attacked the Muslims in Europe, subsequent to this the leader of the Muslim forces, Saladin, recaptured Jerusalem in 1187. In response to this the third crusade set off in the year 1189 but returned to Europe after capturing the town of Acre close to Jerusalem. This was followed by five more crusades till the year 1270 but the city of Jerusalem could not be recaptured. One of the most tragic crusades was the Children’s’ crusade in 1212 in which thousands of children died enroute to Jerusalem.
