Christianity
The followers of Jesus Christ are known as Christians. Jesus Christ lived about 2000 years ago in the land which is now called Israel. He was a prophet and a teacher. Christians believe that he was the son of God who had come to Earth to save people from sinning. Jesus was killed by his enemies but his followers believe that he was resurrected and he joined his father in heaven. After his resurrection his followers spread his teachings and today more than 1500 million Christians make Christianity one of the largest religions of the world. Over the years the religion got divided into three sects i.e. Roman Catholics, Protestants and the Russian Orthodox Church. Though all these sects have their own methods of worshipping, they all share a common belief in Jesus Christ and his teachings. The prayers are generally performed in Churches, in groups called congregations, and are conducted by a priest.
The holy book of the Christians is called the Bible. This book is divided into two parts i.e. the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament has the teachings of Christ and his followers while the New Testament teaches to love God and fellow humans and to forgive one’s enemies. Christians accept both the Testaments while the Jews accept only the Old Testament.
Christian festivals include ‘Advent’ which is the preparation for ‘Christmas’ the birth of Jesus. ‘Good Friday’ the day Jesus died, ‘Easter Sunday’ the day he was resurrected after his crucifixion etc. In Christianity the largest sect is of the Roman Catholics who believe the Pope to be the head of the Catholic church and God’s representative on Earth. They always follow him on all religious matters. The Pope lives in the smallest Independent country, which is it’s own capital, called Vatican City. Catholics have prayers called Mass on Sundays and they regularly ,o into confession where they s and seek forgiveness for their sins.
