Singing & Opera
During the middle ages Priests and Monks sang holy songs as they wandered preaching religion. The capability in human beings to be able to modulate their voice has inspired many song writers and composers. Many men and women can sing at very high pitches while others are capable of producing deep and rich sounds. It was in the 17th century that opera originated in Italy and spread to the other parts of the world. As this happened new forms of singing developed and by the 18th century professional singers were entertaining audiences all across the world. In an opera all the words are sung by the characters. Some of the famous operas were composed by famous composers like Mozart, Puccini, Wagner and Verdi. Singing also developed for a different reason. Before the engine was invented, all labour was done manually by gangs of men. To maintain a rhythm while working, these men use to chant songs called Chanties or Shanties. These chanties were especially popular with sailors
