Life in the Coniferous Forests
In northern Canada and the C.I.S. there are vast belts of forests called `Coniferous forests’. In the summer months, as the snow melts, ample food for many varieties of birds and animals is available and the otherwise cold forests are suddenly full of life with birds like Woodpeckers, Tits, Cross bills, Jays, Hazel Hen, etc feeding on berries, insects and seeds. There are also a lot of predatory birds like various kinds of Owls, Hawks, and Falcons and Goo sander Ducks which feed on smaller birds or other wildlife. Amongst the animals there are both herbivores and carnivores living in these forests. The largest herbivore is the Moose, Elk or Caribou, other ground animals include the Grey Squirrel, Golden Chipmunk, Virginia Opossum, Flying Squirrels, Tree Porcupines, Hares etc also live here. Along with these a lot of carnivores like the Brown and Black Bears, Wolves, Minks, Wolverines, Weasels, Lynx etc also make the coniferous forests their home.
