How does the weather affect the shapes of our houses?
As you may know, the weather is not the same all over the world. If you live in Britain and visit say, Spain, for your holidays you will know that Spain is generally warmer and drier than Britain. Some parts of the world are so hot and have so little rain that they are called deserts where there may only be sand and bare rock with little animal or plant life. Not all deserts are hot, however; the regions around the North and South Poles may be regarded as deserts because all of the water is locked up as ice. There are other areas, such as in Zaire, Africa, where it is hot and moist and steamy jungles flourish.
Broadly, the world can be divided into three great zones — the polar zones surrounding the poles, then the temperate zones where the weather is rather more varied with few extremes, and the tropical zones where deserts and jungles abound. People would find it very difficult to survive in the variety of climates in which they live if they did not build houses and offices best suited to the conditions.
