Growth of Plants
Like other living things plants also grow and develop, they too are able to adapt themselves to their environment. Earth has its effect on plants and they are able to sense it. This explains how they are able to maintain an upward and downward growth. When a seed is provided the right environment, it begins to germinate. It is not important which way the seed is lying or buried when germination begins because it is able to identify on its own that the roots have to grow downwards and the stem upwards. As an example if the seed is buried upside down then the root will curl around it and begin to grow downwards and like wise for the stem. The process of responding to the gravity is controlled by hormones within the plant and this process is called geotropism. The growth of a root in a wrong direction is corrected by these hormones. This holds true for the stern as well, which grows upwards towards sunlight.
