Janmashtami

Janmashtami marks the celebration of the birth of Lord Krishna who later on killed Kane, his maternal uncle-evil and vice incarnation. His birthday is celebrated with great gusto and enthusiasm and delight almost throughout the length and breadth of India. He is remembered as a great saviour, harbinger of divine message of Karma and of ‘eternal values.

This festival is celebrated in a grand manner. Celebrations at all Krishna temples, especially the ones in Vrindavan, Mathura, Dwarka, Guruvayoor, Udipi and ISKON temples attract unending streams of devotees, across the globe.

Temples are decorated artistically and beautifully and prayers are offered at midnight. An idol of Lord Krishna is placed in a cradle in the temple and it is gently rocked. Devotees sing devotional songs. At midnight after the ritual worship, the day long fast is broken.

At the stroke of midnight, the sound of unending clapping and the call’ of the conch shell rent the air and fill the hearts of the devotees with reverence. A small deity, wrapped in white, is placed on a high pedestal so that all could get a glimpse of the saviour, the lord’s most glorious incarnation. The celebration of Janmashtami works as an adhesive to unite the people of India who belong to different stratas of life.
