Global Warming

The term ‘Global warming’ evolves from the theory that Our plant is getting hotter due to an increase in the Greenhouse effect brought about by an increase in emission of carbon-dioxide and other gases., Thus; the greenhouse effect and global warming both correspond with each other.

Greenhouse effect refers to the incoming solar radiation that passes through earth’s atmosphere, heats the earth’s surface and absorbs of much of the outgoing infra-red radiation re-radiated from the earth’s surface. The heat is thus retained similar to the glass panels of a greenhouse or like the windshield in a parked car. As a consequence, the atmosphere becomes warmer. The key gases to this process are water vapour, carbon-dioxide, methane, ozone and other trace gases The natural greenhouse effect has kept the earth’s average temperature at a very hospitable 24°C.Without this natural ‘Greenhouse effect’, the temperatures would be much lower than th are now and life, as known today, would not be possible.

Global warming is caused by an increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases (chlorofluorocarbons, carbon-dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide etc) because of human activities, howsoever inadvertent these may be, and has several consequences that could occur if the problem is left ignored by most of the world. Our planet would get hotter, glaciers would melt and wildlife would suffer. An inverse effect on the other hand could trigger an ice age. At our current rate of creating these gases by industrial emissions, car and other motor vehicles and burning fossil fuels, scientists predict a temperature increase of 4 – 9°F by 2050. (9°F separates today’s average temperature from the last ice age).

There is little doubt that the air’s carbon-dioxide concentration has been increasing since the industrial revolution and this is attributed to the rise in humanity’s use of fossil fue4 (such as coal, oil, natural gas etc). There is little dispute that the earth has warmed slightly over the same period Industrial societies typically have a history of shallow ecological reactive policy making as opposed to deep ecological pro-active planning. With this tradition, how can we realistically expect to survive in the years to come? The prospects of future generations being born into a world affected by human-induced warming seem probable unless proactive actions are taken on an international basis to check the global warming.

Ozone, which is a minority constituent in the earth’s atmosphere, is responsible for most of the absorption of ultra-violet (UV) radiation which otherwise would reach the earth’s surface and cause health problems to the living beings) Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) released by human beings destroy the ozone layer. CFCs and other contributory substances are, commonly referred to as `ozone depleting substances’ The Governments have now started enforcing a minimal or zero use of CFCs by the industry.

Global warming has become a major scientific and social issue during the past decade. The increase in greenhouse gases has captured broad public attention because it could easily damage the nature and many socio-cultural aspects of life. The long-term burning of the fossil fuels is at the forefront of the issue of global warming. Global warming is destroying the earth. Hence, the emphasis now is to produce energy that is safer for the earth.

International Agencies such as the UN have taken an initiative to bring various country Governments together to evolve methods to achieve the objective. The UN Panel on climate change recommends Mai we immediately cut our use of fossil fuels by at least half. The same panel projects that by 2050, over a million more people could die each year from malaria because of higher mosquito population due to global warming. Already, yellow and dengue fever bearing mosquitoes are found over 3000 feet higher than their normal range in South America. Other predicted results of global warming include expanding deserts, forest fires, heat waves, crop failures etc.
