Domestic Violence and Its Preventive Measures

 

Domestic violence is an act in which one family member physically hurts the other family member or violates upon his/her freedom. Demanding dowry from bride’s parents, denying giving money for the basic maintenance, beating, denying food and medicine, snatching salary, forcing woman out of the house, stopping her from using specific part of the house or wearing clothes, etc. are some of the acts included in domestic violence.

Beating, slapping, biting, kicking, punching, giving life threats and burning results in physical injury. This is called physical abuse. Talking. indecent photos, ill-mannered behaviour, abnormal sexual activities, etc. are also included in domestic violence. Oral or emotional humiliation includes, embarrassing woman for not giving birth to male child, name-calling, doubting her character, stopping her children from taking education, restricting her from going outside the house, forcing her to marry against her wish or not letting her many to a man of her choice, etc. are some other kinds of domestic violence suffered by woman.

As a preventive measure, Prevention of Domestic Violence Act 2005 was passed by Central Government of India to protect women. According to this Act, a victim girl below 14 years can complain to Prevention officer or police against maltreatment done to her. Order of immediate protection and shelter is given. If order is not followed, then the accused is punished with an imprisonment of a year and fine of rupees 20,000.

Article 498(A) of Indian Penal Court states that a person accused of dowry or any other cruelty to women has to prove his innocence. Until then it is considered as non-bailable crime. To provide justice against domestic violence and prevent women from being victimised there are many organizations and Non-Governmental Organizations for women who work hard to protect them. Direct inquiries are carried out into dowry death and wife beating cases.

With the help of media, Government has created awareness among peoples against domestic violence. Social workers, Non-Governmental Organizations and other social activists are working hard to prevent domestic violence. ‘Bell Bajao’ campaign is an example of a very good scheme to stand against domestic violence.
