Bus Service Between Srinagar and Muzaffarabad

A Carvavan-E-Aman Kashmir has been a bone of contention between India and Pakistan since the partition between the two countries was decreed. Three wars have already been fought on this issue and thousands of people have lost their lives but the problem is still there as it has ever been. The Kashmiri people have been living under the curse of terrorism since 1990. Thousands of innocent people have been put to death but of no avail. Unfortunately the leaders of Pakistan have been under the wrong impression that they can separate Kashmir from India by helping terrorism in Kashmir.

On the other side the citizens of both the countries want peace and harmony between the two countries. During the partition period millions of people were forced to migrate from Pakistan to India and from India to Pakistan. But the emotional tie between the people of the two countries still exists. They always remember their neighbours whom they left in the other country and wish to pay a visit to their friends and relatives.

India wants to establish peaceful relationship with its neighbour. Our former Prime Minister Mr. Atal Bihari Vajpayee started a bus service between Delhi and Lahore. People of both the countries were highly pleased with this move and hundreds of people crossed the boundaries to meet their dear and near ones. Many of them lay prostrate in the sand of the county where they were born. Their friends and relatives gave them a warm welcome. But with the change in Pakistani rulers the bus service was interrupted and the atmosphere again became tense.

Thanks God that the Pakistani leaders realized that war is not a solution to any problem and it was agreed between the two countries that the route between Srinagar and Muzaffarabad should be opened so that the people of Kashmir might meet their relatives and friends and peace, friendship and camaraderie might be restored.

So on Thursday, April 7, people’s will won over militants whim. At 11.30 a.m. PM Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi gave a VIP flag off to the buses from Shere Kashmir cricket stadium in Sri Nagar. Thousands of people braved a down pour to witness the flag off which was also attended by J & K Governor S. K. Sinha, CM Mufti Mohammad Sayeedand some other Union Ministers. In his address the PM heralded this ‘new chapter’ in the chequered history of the two country. He said the historic step would help in fostering peace and harmony between India and Pakistan.

On the other side of the front line i.e. in Pak occupied Kashmir 100 odd locals welcomed passengers to the beat of drums. Young girls in colourful attire performed traditional folk dances adding to the fan fare. The passenger who arrived from Muzaffarabad to Sri Nagar were so sappy that words failed to bring out their emotions. They crossed into the Indian soil after a historic bus journey that reunited people divided by the partition of 1947. It was a touching sight as an old woman on a wheelchair lad the visitors, who became emotional as soon as they reached this side of Kashmir. One of them bent to kiss the soil and several of them could be been with moist eyes.

In her address, the congress president Mrs. Sonia Gandhi reiterated that India is determined to bring peace and normally in the region. She said, we will leave no stone unturned in our endeavour to bring peace in the region and the bus service will prove to be a unique example for the world to bring peace in the region.” Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir rightly said,”The unthinkable has been achieved today.” Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed announced that the bus service would be called Caravan-e-Aman or a Caravan of Peace. Let us hope that this Caravan-e-peace will surmount all obstacles and a new era of peace and harmony will begin with this bus service. One thing is quite clear from the feeling of the people of both the countries that they are against terrorists and want to come close from one another.
