The Worst Misfortune for a Traveller
Outline: Several misfortunes can befall traveller – fall ill – empty pockets – not know the language of the new place. Several misfortunes can befall a traveller – to have no money, to fall ill, not to know the language, or to be ignorant of the local culture. It is evident that of all these misfortunes, the worst is to find oneself without money in a foreign country.
If one has enough money the other misfortunes can be easily put up with and sometimes even enjoyed. If a traveller with plenty of money falls ill, he can get admitted to a good hospital, get suitable medical treatment and the attendance of charming nurses. If such a traveller doesn’t happen to know the language of the country he is visiting, he can call for the services of an interpreter. If he is ignorant of the local culture, there are guides who are willing to enlighten him on this point in return for a handsome remuneration.
But if a traveller has no money in a foreign country, either because his pocket has been picked or because his cheques cannot be cashed, he has to face endless miseries. If he goes to a hotel and explains his situation to the manager, he will not be believed. He will be hard put to even borrow a little money to write or to communicate to his friends or members of his family. To have no money is undoubtedly the worst misfortune that can befall a traveller.
Difficult Words: Evident- clear. Interpreter- one who explains the meaning of a foreign language. Remuneration- payment for work.
