The Value of Silence
It is rightly said that speech is silver but silence is golden. When a person speaks, howsoever carefully, he is bound to make some slip of the tongue. And even a talk arising out of the heart with all the good intentions in the mind of the speaker, is liable to be misunderstood by the listeners.
We get the maximum peace of mind at a place where silence reigns. We feel sick at a noisy place. A place like a fish or vegetable market is no better than a bedlam.
It is said about a fool that we can’t recognize him until he opens his mouth. Sometimes, some clever people make a person speak and thus they trap him when he fails to say his viewpoint in a convincing manner.
We have the story of the cunning fox and the crow having a piece of cheese in its mouth. Had the crow not opened its mouth to sing a song on the bidding of the fox, it would not have lost its piece of cheese.
When our mind is full of worries or thoughts of every kind, we feel agitated. Sometimes, we don’t know even the cause of this agitation because of the confusion in our mind. Then if we allow our mind to revert to a state of silence, we feel the balm like soothing effect of this sweet silence.
