Essay on “The Solar System” Complete Essay for Class 10, Class 12 and Graduation and other classes.

The Solar System

The most abundant element in the universe is hydrogen. In the universe, hydrogen and a small amount of helium formed the first widespread elements. Thereafter came the stars, including the sun which is also a star.

By the solar system is meant the sun and the planets with their moons. Here, we will focus only on the planets and not their moons. Besides these, we also have comets, asteroids or planetoids, etc.

Although the universe is said to have come into existence some 15 billion years ago, the stars and the sun were formed much later.

The planets are the part of the solar family which is headed by the sun. The sun is much larger than any of the planets. It is about one crore fifty lakh kilometres away from the earth. It is the sun which provides heat and light in the entire solar system.

There are nine planets in the solar system which arranged in order of distance from the Sun are — Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto of these, Mercury is the hottest and Pluto is the coldest. These planets in order of size are —Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Earth, Venus, Mercury, Mars and Pluto. Of these, Jupiter is the largest and Pluto is the smallest.

While studying some peculiarities of these planet, we note that Mars is red in colour. Billions of years ago, it had an atmosphere with air, water, etc. like the earth. Why and how it became dry and cold is a mystery. Several missions sent to Mars have mostly failed. The latest among these was the much hyped Beagle-2 which was declared failed in December 2003 when it failed to send any signals. Thus, whether there is any life on the Mars, even if in the shape of microbes or not remains a mystery. Another mission sent by NASA has given some hope of the possibility of revival of atmosphere on the Mars. Venus is also known as the morning or evening star. It is the brightest planet. Both Mars and Venus are visible with naked eye from the earth. There is another peculiarity of Venus. It is that whereas all other planets revolve round the sun in an anti-clockwise direction, Venus revolves round it in clockwise direction. Perhaps, as so far known, earth is the only one among the planets on which life exists, as it is the only planet which has the most suitable atmosphere for life.
